We are sad to see the Rheinlander go. It was an annual tradition to go out to dinner here with family. The atmosphere was great and we will miss it. Yes you can go to Gustav's for the food, but it is not the same.

I went here with my family on Christmas Eve, the service was not very good. They had a limited Christmas menu and I asked for gluten free and vegetarian options, the waiter too about 20 minutes to come back with an answer. I ordered a gluten free option and when they finally brought me my food it had pasta, he took it back and brought back the same plate but with vegetables, the good thing is I am intolerant to gluten and I do not have celiac because the cross contamination would have made me very sick. The waiter never bother to ask about it. The salmon was overcooked even though he told me the chef usually cooked medium rare. When the waiter finally come to check on us I complained about the salmon and he offer to re do it, I was not willing to wait another 30 minutes for more food.
I was very disappointed with the whole experience, no planning to go there again.

This restaurant is no doubt a Portland icon. Big and spacious. Our group of six had a "private" room. Nice! Food was "OK." Yes, there was live accordion music and singing. The performer was talented. But we weren't there to listen to music -- we were there to talk among old friends. So we viewed the performer's uninvited entry as an inconsiderate interruption. TIP: In the future be so polite as to ask if your services are desired before entering a private area.

Fantastic atmosphere, the crab fondue was delicious and my potato pancakes were some of the best I have ever tasted. My husband ordered the sausage sampler and we both agreed that they were a little bland. My daughter ordered the chicken schnitzel with fries and she loved it. The ciders they offer are top notch. Overall I was impressed.

Delicious, authentic German food in a wonderful setting. If you go with a group you'll be seated in an area where there is live accordion music and singing. The musician that I've seen every time I've gone is great and will take requests, and even showed us an edelweiss flower that he had under glass!
