Until we walked in, we didn't know it is a somewhat formal atmosphere. We were going to leave because we had 2 kids who had been stuck in the car for 3 hours, not exactly peaceful dinner companions. Just for us, they opened up the patio on the roof and made off menu kid friendly food for my boys!

I didn't love the experience, although I wanted to, since this place is so close to where I live. I give the decor in Cafe Sam a 10. This place is really quirky, and I loved the subway tile, skylights and oil lamps. The rest of this place was a bit less impressive. I ordered the pasta with fried zucchini and cheese at the server's recommendation, and although it wasn't bad, the sauce was too sweet and overall there wasn't a lot of flavor. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I ordered something else, because my friend loved her pasta with seafood. The server asked if I'd like soup or salad, and I chose the salad, which came with a pickled egg and amazing dijon viniagrette. The server gave me the impression that this came with my pasta, but we saw on the bill that both me and my friend were charged $5 each for the very small salads. The homemade chocolate chip cookie that we each got with the bill was great, but I'm not sure I'll be returning. Even though there were not many people dining here on the Saturday night that we went, our food took a disproportionately long time to come out. And for the price, there are much better restaurants in Pittsburgh. Just a half a mile away from Cafe Sam are The Yard, Steel Cactus, and Mercurio's, all of which I think would be a better choice for a sit-down dinner in Shadyside.

Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience. First, several beverage items were "out of stock". Them after waiting quite a bit, my food was cold, dry, and had little taste. Additionally, when I asked for a spoon, I was told none were available at time.

Went for my two year anniversary with my girlfriend. Beautiful restaurant. Food was good and well priced. They even gave us a complimentary dessert for us to eat! Definitely going back when I come to Pittsburgh again!
