Despite the name, "Independent Brewing Co." does not brew their own beer. I appreciate they sell "craft" beer, but when I googled "Pittsburgh microbreweries" this came up and that's the only reason I went there. That being said, the service was good, the craft beer selection was good, and it seemed like a cool place to hang out. My only critique inside was their tiny metal bar-stools felt hard as a rock. There's a similar tavern in Philadelphia called "Johnny Brenda's" that these guys could take some notes from.

First, it's not a real brewing company. They just carry local beers. Second, they carry mix drinks, but you will pay $10 for a ball of ice. If you take the ice out, you only get 2oz of a cocktail. My husband was speechless when he ordered the Oaxacan Moscow Mule and noticed this.
Food is average.
If you're in the area and want a drink, go for a beer not the cocktails.

Great food, but expensive. Beer selection is great - mostly local, and well chosen list, and prices are reasonable.

Decent drinking hole with a wide selection of beer, mead & wine. Food is really good - especially the fries.
Negatives: Too few waiters for a busy weekday evening. Gets crowded at times, and you're going to wait.
Positives: The quality of food (presentation & portion size), value for money and location.

I love Independent Brewing Company! Awesome old records are always on. Very cozy, good place to take a date for drinks. Great selection of local beers. As a beer geek, there's always at least a few I've never tried. Cocktails used to be on point, but you might want to walk over to Hidden Harbor now. I've only gotten food here once, and it was very good.
