Always great service and friendly. Food is mouth watering and there's many choices to choose from. There's something for everyone on the menu no matter what you feel like eating. My favorite is lunch here

Went to the Red Onion the first time and ordered the big plate, which was worth the money had the waitress ensured my order specifications actually made it to the plate. She was pleasant enough but I like my eggs not over easy but between over easy and over medium - a big thing for me. The bacon was quality, but poorly prepared. I used to be a short order cook for breakfast and lunch, and I know the difference between bacon that is cooked to order, and bacon that is parred off in the oven and then finished on the griddle. So it ends up on your plate like baked bacon that was overcooked because if you do par ahead bacon, you have to do is just so and this wasn't. That shows a lack of care for the ingredient. Cold toast arrived with the big plate, and so about 25% of the meal was enjoyable.
So I went back and gave them a second chance. This time, I ordered the malted waffles. Around my area, there is not a lot of choice compared to where I work on the peninsula and the quality, frankly in the BEast Bay is lower than other parts of the bay, that is just the deal. The malted waffles came and they were thin, dry and really there is nothing good to say about them other than they were not burned. Yet, the cook was pranging and whanging his spatula off the griddle like some Benihana chef, punctuating the quiet breakfast atmosphere with the soundtrack from Vulcan's Forge, piercing everyone's ears apparently especially mine.
Add to this the waitress the second time around was hovering like a predator instead of an attentive service person in that manner in which people behave like they don't want you there because it is borderline unlawful if they say it. Old fashioned prejudice is what is really was, but she was young and has a lot to learn, and I am a forgiving individual to a reasonable degree, as everyone could be. She was not utilizing the opportunity I was demonstrating with my coffee cup to give me refills, and so I had to drink water while eating because she had to 'cut me off' where the first time I came, on a weekend, three different waitresses offered me refills seven times so I suspect this weekday waitress was not conforming to all the other waitress service standards.
I'd gotten a really good recommendation (from a questionable source, to be honest) for this place, but both my meals there, each over twenty dollars for a single person with coffee, to which I left my usual generous tip, were mediocre at best tipping toward the disappointing side.
Now, I've made a thousand dollar tip before in my previous life as a waiter, so I know what it is like to earn for world class service, so I know what to look for without being condescending. Rarely these days do you find truly good service like you used to get everywhere because people wanted your business to come back.
Alas, culture has degraded over the last twenty years, and we are awash in cheap ingredients, minimal labor efforts and lip service replacing elbow grease. I get that. Its the way things are now. But at least make the food edible enough to enjoy.
That's not asking a lot. Red Onion, you are overrated and underachieving. You seem to be riding on a reputation that is long lost. I can only say I will come back on the weekends when there is enough business for the A team to perhaps have half their act together. So you've lost about 50 % of the money you could have made off me.

The people here treat me with respect and I appreciate that. The food is properly prepared and I am not rushed. Nice atmosphere as well

1st time here since they opened. I have to say, I was very impressed. Had the fish and shrimp and chips. Always order my fries extra kit crispy and they were outstanding. On 1st glance, the fish and shrimp didn't look Wonderful. But they certainly tasted great.
Service was excellent.
