Great place to live! Especially if you have kids. Awesome access to playgrounds, safe space for kids, great neighbors, international community and many community wide events. Nearby to grocery, shopping mall and libraries.
The strong negative is only to make people aware of the cleaning issue during the move out process. The management have set an unattainable level of cleaning expectation. We cleaned our apartment for two days and they claimed to have put in 12 hours of work (you apparently get 4 free hours of work - but they never mention it anywhere) including this 4 free hours. They charge $35 per hour.
When you move in - take photos of everything. And I mean everything. Note every surface (windows, radiators) that may have tiny scratches or even dust - inside and outside. Same thing with closet. If you think you are being too picky - you are not. Trust me!!!! You will realize this when you move out.
Additionally they seem to have this weird fixation with kitchen cabinets. We cleaned our cabinets inside and out and also the front of the cabinet doors and they still claimed to have required 4 hours of cleaning. Completely baffling!!! We even provided photos (some examples below) and they seem to disregard that evidence. And they provided no photo evidence to back their point.
We have lived in several apartments over the years in many parts of the country and never have been charged once for cleaning. Beside this one issue - it is a great place to live.

I lived at the CSCC for almost 6 years and overall I had a great time over there. Very nice manager and office staff and a wonderful place for family living...Only as others say you should be extremely careful with all those fines, particularly, when you move out!

Beware of management and their predatory practices. They will try to nickel and dime you at the smallest opportunity and will pretend you are a shareholder up to the point they need to charge you. At that point, both the students and management will tell you there is nothing they can do. And they will keep your deposit, particularly if you are "of colour".

Living in CSCC is like living in a building in the middle of a Minneapolis park. The community feel and the green space available made this my favorite place to live ever!! The people I met here have taught me all sorts of things, from how to make Chana Dal Vada, to how to balance on one of the co-op's free slacklines. That's right. They have free slack lines to check out, so it is really fun to do that here while grilling at one of the many grilling spots on site. Like I said, it's like living in a park! Also, Insight Brewing is right across the street... if you like Minneapolis culture, this is one of the most ideal spots to rent: international social atmosphere, city-park feel, very close to NE breweries. Highly recommend!

After reading some of the biased negative reviews I thought I would clarify some things for those who lack the basic understanding of living in a Co-Op or an apartment for that matter.
Cheap prices:
Before moving into CSCC, I looked for housing for over 5 months and I couldn’t find one place that was affordable AND close to campus. For its location, it’s cheap. You know why it’s cheap? Because it is a Co-Op, that’s how they keep the rent lower than many other housing options in the area. You have the option to lower your rent even more by being a stockholder. As a stockholder, you have to do some chores for your buildings. You get assigned a week once every 1 1/2 months to either clean the coreway (mainly vacuuming) or clean the laundry room (once every 3 months) in your building (mainly sweeping and wiping). The best part is YOU DON’T have to do that if you don’t want to. You just pay $100 more in your rent. So for those who complain about the cleaning, no one forced them to do it. Now if you choose to do it, you need to do it right. If you are going to clean your house but leave the trash full, would that really be cleaning? No. I. Don’t. Think. So.
Pet policy
Like any apartment complex, there is a fee that each resident must pay if they have a pet. So if you decide you want to have a pet there are rules that you need to follow. It’s that simple.
Moving Out
This IS a STUDENT HOUSING, which means that you must be a student at UMN to live there. So if you are no longer a student, they have the right to let you go. So if you are approaching graduation, act like an adult and figure things out before you are forced to leave. You are given 60 days from graduation to get your act together and move out. Unless you broke their rules multiple times then they have the right to kick you out. Again, Simple as that.
Inspection
According to their lease, they have the right to inspect your apartment WITH PRIOR NOTICE to ensure that everything works and that smoke alarms are working. Don’t worry, they are not interested in your graduate life secrets. Not sure where ppl get the whole without notice idea lol.
If you find these things concerning or feel like it will not work out for you, then be my guest and go try and find a 3 bd townhouse for less than $1100. Good Luck with that!
