This is where the French Dip sandwich originated and Cole's has been at this same exact location since 1908. I just love their French Dip sandwich (which is a much better quality than Philippe's sandwich) along with an order of bacon potato salad. Cole's also serves up a very delicious bourbon pecan pie. Los Angeles gangster Mickey Cohen's corner table is still there near the bar.

Home of the French Dip (that wasn't France you philistines!). There is an undisclosed speakeasy, if you know the password and an inordinate number of attractive and charming patrons (if you're into that sort of thing). Food is delicious and drinks are impeccable.

They only sell a couple things for dinner. Pretty much only French Dip sandwiches with a variety of meats. But they're all good.
They have a similarly small, but quality breakfast and brunch menu on the weeks and have a solid overall bar.
Oh, and The Varnish is in the back for a good old-fashioned speak easy with excellent cocktails.

Great ambience. Literally over 100 years old time machine. Went for what most say is the best bloody Mary...lived up to expectations. Claims to be the beef dip originators. So does Philippes down the street. I'm not sure which is true but I much prefer Cole's. The meat is stacked. The condiment are superb.

Been eating at Cole's for a while now. The menu is pretty narrow, but they excel in their sandwiches and sides. Staff is always fast and friendly. Great drinks.
Definitely try the speakeasy in the back (Varnish) if you go for dinner.
