my mother recently went into a nursing home leaving her residence vacant. my older brother went to gans and smith to discuss the homeowner's policy. as soon as the agent learned that the home was vacant they immediately initiated cancellation on the policy. the objectionable part to all this is the fact that gans and smith writes policies thru foremost insurance that covers this exact situation (verified thru foremost's find an agent writing this type of policy). this was never mentioned. agent never even offered to see if a specific coverage was available. just your policy is cancelled and don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
