NOT what you're looking for!
The graffiti decorating the shelter house should have been my first clue this "park" was not going to be suitable for a family gathering. Unless your family is a street gang; and then I guess it would depend on what gang you're affiliated with. There's only one point of entry for vehicles, and this requires maneuvering through the nearby neighborhood to get to Gilmore Ave. The website for Wyandotte County Parks and Rec describes the park as having amenities such as soccer fields and bathrooms. There was definitely a field, as the grass had grown up past ankle-height. And the bathrooms... We couldn't use them! Locked out by not one, but two heavy-duty keyed deadbolts, and a steel grate (to keep out intruders or anyone needing to relieve themselves, no doubt). I had the park reserved for a Saturday, and upon finding my guests couldn't use the facilities, I called the Parks Department. Who advised me to call the Streets Department. Who advised me to call KCK Police to send a park ranger to unlock the bathrooms. I called the number as instructed and was told a ranger would be over in about 10-15 minutes with a key. Within 10 minutes, I received a call from KCK PD and was told that the bathrooms would remain locked for the weekend due to the park being located in a "rough area". I explained that I had paid a reservation, my guests needed access to the facilities, and that I was told that the bathrooms would be unlocked. The officer stated that there was nothing the police would do for us, as they didn't have a key to the bathrooms in the first place and that I would need to take it up with Wyandotte County Parks and Rec. I'll be leaving a glowing review for their city office as well.
