I have studied at three different universities and there are certain qualities about Manchester that I really don't like. Firstly there is no campus feel. Secondly, teachers at my other universities were down to Earth and students were normal and wet behind the ears. Here, lots of students are very middle class and the staff are not friendly and sometimes confrontational. In one class, the lecturer had a five minute rant at a student who was quietly speaking to someone next to him. This was in a huge lecture hall in Roscoe and everyone looked stunned as if to say did that just happen. The lecturer was literally gasping for breath in sheer anger. The university feels artificial and like the only thing that matters is it's reputation and they keep going on about the rankings in lectures. It feels like a business and staff are under the spotlight. There is no open door policy. There were huge numbers of students in my classes here (over 200 in my first year). They used PhD students to teach lab instead of smaller classes like at other unis. I withdrew and went elsewhere.

The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.

I encourage all readers of this review to bear in mind that this experience was from 1974 when I finished university. I tried to add a review back then but there wasn't a google page available at the time. So, I always wanted to be a part of the students union during my studies but was never given the chance. I put my name in the hat for all three of the years I studied there. I used to think that the system was honest and fair and that the best candidates would get chance to add value to what was a cracking place to study. Absolutely fricking not, the panel is nothing but an old boy's club who vote in the man they think can drink a pint of pedigree the fastest out of their shoes. Now I'm sure they will insist things have changed since I studied there blah blah blah usual stuff. If you like pedigree then this is definitely for you, if not - get yourself over to Warwick!

This review is in regard to ON CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION. BEWARE- If you are a potential student who is considering on campus accommodation. As an international Masters student, I have never been subjected to such rudeness, inconsideration, and disregard before and my feelings are shared by many of my colleagues. With a lack of communication and general disdain for students' well-being, the accommodation staff at the University of Manchester are the worst university staff I have ever encountered, and I work in higher education! Spotty wifi, barely maintained facilities, and substandard cleaning services as well as entire accommodations being forcibly evicted with poor communication and processes are only some of the nightmares I've encountered during my year here. Please DO NOT waste your money living on campus. I had to as a last resort and it has made me regret completing my Masters degree at the University of Manchester.

One of the best universities. I've done two degrees here and loved every moment of it. They're extremely supportive and care about individual students. My lecturers always went the extra mile for us and made everything so enjoyable.
