The worst restaurant experience of my life! Read on...

I ordered venison, which smelled like dustbins - completely inedible. I asked them to take it back, and couldn't face eating anything after that smell! We had ordered sorbet for dessert, which was like an animal's water trough in winter - just a sheet of ice over something disgusting below.

The service was deplorable, and we just left without attempting anything else. We usually have such a nice time in restaurants, but would have had a better time in McDonald's.

We often shop at Tesco Golden Hill, and often spot the owner/chef buying lots of ingredients there. You would imagine the cook to source his ingredients from somewhere a little more enticing than Tesco, seeing as the restaurant has always had quite a decent reputation in the local area! Indeed, it used to be a good place to go but -sadly - not anymore.

When we placed our order for two roast beef dinners by telephone, we were assured the maximum total, including delivery would be no more than £19.50( the two dinners came to £17.90 and any mile over 3 mile delivery radius would incur an additional 50p and as we live just over 3 miles away, as verified by google , the delivery should have been free, or at the most 50p) and despite the price quote being over a pound more than the total should have amounted to, we reluctantly agreed.

When the food arrived an hour or so later, the delivery man asked for £21.50, to which I quoted what had already been unreasonably quoted to me on the telephone, to which they were now attempting to charge an additional £2. After what can only be described as exclusively heated attempt on the delivery mans part to hassle me into parting with the additional money, which no doubt my neighbours heard, the delivery man eventually admitted his maths was wrong but neglected to give me my receipt.

My girlfriend is vegetarian so she gave me the beef from her dinner, so I had two portions of beef, which I thought would be an extra large portion of beef, alas, it was stone cold and approximately 70% of what should have been beef was slimey fat.

Not only would we never order from here again, I am still debating whether to contact the police because of the hassle to pay extra, and possibly trading standards or/and the brewery that owns the villager to outline the type of ownership it's currently under.

We visited with a large group of 16 for Sunday lunch and the staff were accommodating and everyone enjoyed their meals. It did take a bit of time, but they were very clear this would be the case on the phone as its only a small restaurant with a few staff.

We will be visiting again and looking forwards to trying the other dishes.
