this store is now under new ownership and the days of surly and drunk reception are over I would hate to think that people are still avoiding the store now that it is being run by a happy kind and very helpful couple. it has become a far better stocked and priced shop that deserves to stay within our community and a place where all may feel safe and welcome.

Although overpriced and poorly-stocked, My partner and I were at first happy to use this store as a matter of convenience as it is close to our home and is open until 9pm, which is a relatively novel concept in Bath. However, the owner is a known alcoholic and this often proved problematic, as it meant that going into the store was often a deeply unpleasant experience owing to his habit of drinking on the job.

My partner and I were happy to put up with this for a while. However, one Sunday morning, I went in to buy a bottle of milk only to be met with a surly, clearly hungover shopkeeper who, under the considerable duress of absolutely no provocation whatsoever, crudely chastised me for spending so much money in his store, and curtly told me to '**** off'. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valour, I did exactly that. I'm not saying that I expect service with a smile, but if I'm going to spend £2.15 on a couple of pints of milk, I want at least a pat on the back for my brave attempt at single-handedly rejuvenating the British economy; not to be snarled at for having the temerity to walk into the store with a pocket full of change.

I did attempt to smooth things over a few days later by explaining the situation to his fellow shopkeeper-in-arms (who I presume is his wife, and if this is true, I feel profoundly sad for her), but this all seemed to be par for the course in her sad, empty eyes.

If you have a deeply-ingrained fear of the giant Morrisons situated at the bottom of the hill and just a little bit more money than sense (hey, we've all been there. That's how swimming pools are born) then I suppose there is a time and place for the Fairfield Stores, but owing to the poisonous atmosphere, I would strongly advise against allowing children to enter the store unsupervised.
