Some decades ago, Hammarby Sjöstad was just a muddy industrial area people described as a slum. But there were visions and changes, and eventually it turned into what it is today.
Nowadays, the area is a popular neighbourhood for foremost young upper middle-class families. It’s modern and rethought, still growing, and the buildings and apartments are built taking the environment into consideration. For example there are sun cells on many buildings, and there are also few parking lots – with the purpose to minimize traffic and to urge people to use the common carpool.
The area is surrounded by water, so you can enjoy generous strolls and find a lot of your own favourite spots to relax and take in the surroundings at. And there are plenty of cafés and restaurants here as well, and even more further away from the water.
You get here easily with a two minute free ferry-ride (shuttle traffic every 10 minutes, all year around) from Barnängsbryggan on Södermalm (check Google maps). Or one stop with the tram from the metro station Gullmarsplan – and just aim for the water.

Probably the worst service in Stockholm. Unless you got a couple of hours to waste on mediocre food.
