What could be an excellent restaurant was let down by possibly over efficient service (felt like we were being rushed), stale bread, stale donuts with coffee and generally mediocre, over oily food.
Beautiful spaces downstairs (we were only allowed to sit outside), great wine list.
I guess overall it lacked authenticity and smacked of pandering to tourists (why should this mean it directly relates to a drop in quality!)
Probably won't be back.

Cosy historic place. Nice ambience, great food and service. Also nice just to have a wine at the bar.

Visited this place after hearing a lot about the roast pig. This place was worth every review and more. The food was fantastic. We had the roast pig and octopus (both house specialities) along with the house red. All which were fantastic.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are a bit more expensive for Madrid.
The portions are large and filling.

(We've visited twice!) Our first tapas experience in Madrid, and we were blown away by Taberna del Capitan Alatriste! Yes - it is more expensive than other tapas bar/ taverns, but take 1 bite off the "suckling roast pig" and you will understand. Crisp to perfection, melt-off-the-bone pork that's juicy and tender, and large portion enough to serve 2 people! In fact- I will recommend only ordering 2 dishes to share here - the plates are HUGE! We also tried the "captain's lamb chop feast, labrijana's plate, and octopus salad". All dishes were amazing - and the most tender, succulent octopus gently seared to perfection!
