Dogs under the nose of Saint Ann

When, at the very end of the 19th century, the six statues of dogs were placed in the the cathedral forecourt, there was outrage from the local population.
"Dogs under the nose of Saint Ann!" howled the local rag.
But now, of course, they are a much-loved feature, reminding us all of the origin of the name Las Canarias - nothing to do with the birds, but because they were over-run by canines.
And not teeth either. :-)
A pleasant stopping place in your stroll around La Vegueta. Don't forget to go and visit the Mercado de Vegueta - the extremely colourful market, open Mon-Thurs 6.30 - 14.00, and until 15.00 on Friday and Saturday. You'll love the hustle and bustle after the peace of this lovely square.
