Mexicana came highly recommended from Lonely Planet, citing their professionalism. Our experience couldn't have been farther from that.

Except for the rudeness on the phone (could be a language-barrier thing, although I speak French), the car was fine. It was dropped off in the centre of M'Kech where we proceeded with the inspection. We took a photo of all the tires (in front of the employee, to whom I was pointing out all the already existing scratches and dents), which were badly threaded, but had been told the day before that it was the only one available... We had to get on the road and had no time (or chance) to change the car.

We got on the road and the car ran just fine. About five days into our travels, one of the tires exploded. We replaced it with the spare tire which was provided. A few km later, a second tire started to go, so we had to stop. We called the office in Agadir, and explained the situation (in French). The "boss" promised that he would reimburse us if we bought a new tire, up to 500Dh. He INSISTED that we replace it with a NEW tire, as (he was correct on this) by law a rental car's replacements have to be new. He even specified the brand: Dunlop or Hancook. So we did, even though the tire cost 650 Dh.

According to the latest safety inspection docs, the tires had been last changed almost 15,000 km previously (they are supposed to be changed every 5,000).

Once at the airport and attempting to get our money back, the company's employee refused to reimburse us, and even threatened to keep part of the deposit. He accused us of orchestrating some kind of conspiracy to get the money, and claimed that one of the two bad tires had never actually been on the car (despite the fact we had the pictures to prove it). He further went on to imply that we somehow found a used bad tire to try extort money out of him. Not one apology was offered for having lost a day of travel (and sleeping in the car on the side of the road), or for the condition of the car.

We had to get the police involved (they were actually really nice), but had a flight to catch. They explained that the process of filing a report and contesting the over-charge would take the whole day, and that it was probably best for us to settle if we didn't want to lose the flight. Eventually, in order not to lose our plane, the police brokered a compromise - we got the full deposit back but were not reimbursed for the tire...

This makes us think that the company uses the pressure of a departing flight to extort money out of tourists at the last minute, coming up with ridiculous excuses not to pay or reimburse.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!! Rent cars from the international companies, or those that have an office within the M'Kech airport itself.
