I believe there's no choice but to visit this museum else if you decide somewhere to go.
Truly reccomend for sort of artistic enthusiasts! Like those who dare to stay KYOTO!

Came here on a rainy day to see the National treasures special exhibition. The pieces on display were some of the best I’ve seen. There are 3 floors with a good range in exhibits many on loan from other museums around the country.
Unfortunately the permanent exhibition was still under renovation as of late October.
Several people are complaining about the price (1500 yen) and how busy it is, however compared with similar special exhibitions in Tokyo I think it’s fairly reasonable and only a little busier (it was raining after all). If you plan a couple of hours and are patient you can get a good view of everything.

Saw the Japanese National Treasures exhibition. Some amazing things to see, and well curated, but better curated for the local language, not with English-only speaking tourists in mind. It was very crowded (likely mostly due to the weather and it being the weekend), but they were efficient in pacing people through into the museum itself and then into the exhibit.

I don't usually complain about travelling and crowds, but this was one of the worst museum experiences I've ever had.

I went to see the special "Masterpieces of Japan" exhibition mid-morning on a weekday. It was expensive (1,500 yen) to get in and there was absolutely no crowd control - they just let person after person in - to the point that you could not see a single artefact. It was 5-6 people deep at every single item, which was something I've never seen before at any museum I've been to.

It was so unpleasant and crowded that we left after 10 minutes, which is unfortunate because the few items we saw looked amazing. For popular/famous exhibits, there should be time allotments for crowd control, just like any other well run museum.

I would not recommend seeing this current exhibit despite the high quality of the items on display - you just cannot enjoy them.

The worst museum I have ever visited in my life. Zero value of the items, bad English translation, no photos allowed. The museum presents just several rooms, and you will find there nothing but so called "calligraphy" (which is unlike the Chinese one unintelligible), some poor drawings (sorry, but that's my humble opinion) and various Buddha statues and shinto items). Ah, there are some really nice paintings... from China. Also you can find a couple of nice swords. That's it. For ¥1500.
