This is a great place to learn about traditional crafts practiced in Kyoto. Exhibition text is in both English and Japanese, and there are craftspeople doing demonstrations (a real highlight! On the day we were there we saw cord being woven, bronze mirrors being polished, candles painted, and wood carved). I loved being able to see the processes used to make some of the crafts I recognised from my sightseeing in Kyoto.

Very good free admission exhibition with exquisite examples of traditional crafts. Comes with English explanations of how these items are made and in some cases, how social rank/hierarchy is expressed through them. There is an expensive museum shop attached to this exhibition, but the crafts sold here are higher quality than what is sold in the tourist shops.
