Easy to find but not especially close to a train line, the ryokan is a nice place, with a staff with barely acceptable English skills and a very traditional feel. The food was great.

Location: Centrally located and it's only 8-10 minutes walk to Nishiki Market. There are plenty of izakayas around too, easy accessible for food.

Room: All rooms have our name tagged at our doors. Room is large for Japanese standard - typical tatami room where you can switch from living room to a bedroom. We went out for dinner and came back with our beds all prepared nicely for us.

Food: We added breakfast the night before because our booking came without food. It costs only 1k yen per person. Food is all served in room for the best experience. I don't think there's a dining room anywhere in the hotel, food are all served in your room. I wouldn't say they serve very good food - but it felt like hearty home-cooked typical Jap breakfast - rice, tamago, tofu, a small appetiser, miso soup, pickles and green tea.

Service: This Jap lady who could barely speak English, ushered us up to our room. She is constantly smiling, and she tried her very best to communicate with us even though we could barely understand her. She taught us how to manage ourselves in the room - gave us yukatas, made us green tea upon reaching our room, served us breakfast the morning and checked a few times if we needed anything.

Sleep Quality: Because of the location, it is quite noisy at night and in the morning. Light sleepers like me could hear bicycle bells, chats, cars or whatnot. I don't know if there is any other room that is less noisy, if I knew it was going to be like that I would have requested for a quieter room. This caused me to get very little sleep despite the comfortable bedding.

Others: There is a hot bath downstairs but you need to go all naked, it's typical Jap policy.

Overall: I will still recommend this place for an affordable ryokan experience in the heart of Kyoto. It's probably not the most traditional, but it is good enough for an experience in the city.

Ryokan Kohro is very authentic, the staff is excellent. The bath was hot and nice, their products for use are very high quality. We had an awesome experience there. Very affordable for what you get.

Simple ryokan in the heart of Kyoto. Staff understood English (some better than others) and the baths were lovely.
