Excellent railway museum, very modern and recently opened. Multiple train simulators so make sure you go early or find the times before you go as they are very popular and places are limited. Also very good viewing gallery.

If you have some time to kill, you're tired of all the temples, and crowds. Just catch a bus to this museum. Lots of real trains of all sorts within the building. Great interactive displays. Spacious. Great for kids.

New museum regarding Japanese railway and history. The museum is a good value at 1200 yen per adult and can easily last you a good 3-4 hours depending on how interested you are in trains and if you know Japanese. Please eat beforehand because it is worth not rushing through. If you do need to eat there are two areas to do so: bento box car and a full cafeteria, the food is expensive and passable.
The museum is also great for kids as it has many activities and kids only areas. Plus many resting areas and restrooms that accommodate for baby changing.
Another thing to note is that the museum is massive and open and had various different types of trains that were used throughout Japan's history and in different areas of the country.
My favorite section is where you get to use a ticket machine and use it at the gate and the ticket machine is translucent so you get to see what happens when you use your ticket.
Outside is an old roundhouse with trains, although it was raining hard so we couldn't experience this fully.
Overall a must visit if you are tired of temples and great for kids.

An exceptional museum with a great variety of real trains, models, hands-on, videos, and reading. Enormous and packed full of activities and sights. Perfect for kids and grown-ups alike. Lots of material about the history of trains in the country and how the Japanese improved the technology to make it more suitable for their geographies. I loved this place and was taken aback by the beauty of these powerful machines.

A great museum with a lot of top-notch exhibits including a station (complete with live ticket vending machine and access gates), a platform and rail crossing as well as multiple in-depth demonstrations and of course tons of real trains. This alone is well-worth your time and the entry price. The big issue though is the limited English information. Around 20% of information is available in English and the audio guide only adds another 25% or so. That said, the experience remains worthwhile, especially for train fans and people with young children.
