Stayed in 2 person private room upstairs for three nights.
Pro: The staff is very friendly and helpful, the place has a traditional atmosphere and the bike rental is pretty cheap.
Con: The place is very narrow and very damp, a lot of things didn't seem too clean (including the otherwise comfortable matress), the location seems to be central but all the sights and things to do are still at least a 5 minute walk away (including konbini, bus stop and sento) or a trip by bike or public transport. We had some bugbites and unfortunately even saw a cockroach in the kitchen.
Although the atmosohere is nice and the sento was a good alternative for the tiny showers, still wouldn't recommend this place for more than one night.

It's a nice, cosy hostel. It has all the necessities one needs (except rental towels!) and it's not too far off from Kyoto station and the center.
The staff is really helpful and nice! They have a lot of maps and will guide you if you have any problems or questions.
They have free lockers for valuables and there's no lock out. The beds are provided with curtains and power outlets. You have a small kitchen with all you need!
Only bad points are that the place is reeeaaaally narrow and tiny and kinda damp.
I guess that if you're of a larger build you'll experience some problems. For example, the door of one of the shower rooms is really narrow, I can only comfortably get in sideways.
Besides that, the place is just kind of musky and damp. That's probably because it's made out of wood, but still.

Stayed in 2nd floor private room. Really great staff. Unfortunately that's the only thing to love. Location appears roughly central in Kyoto, but that's actually a bad thing as most sites are east & west. About 18 minutes walk to closest rail station, which requires several more stops to central Kyoto station. Bus stops are closer, but busses past noon are often completely full (as are the streets in general). None of that is the hostel's fault of course, but a lack of basic cleanliness definitely is. Had many bug bites after sleeping on the otherwise comfortable mattress...in march. Not a good sign of cleanliness. Kyoto has many wonderful places, this is affordable but you can do better.

This review is for a private bedroom on the second floor.
First, the pros. The staff is really kind, and for that I am leaving the 2 stars. Very willing to help out guests. Very wonderful people.
Cons. However, the place itself and the location aren't as terrific as the staff...
Location. While it is near bus stops, you have a long travel to the majority of the nightlife, restaurants, and temples. You really have to be prepared for the trips as a result.
Noisy. You can hear people opening the sliding bathroom doors or walking up the narrow staircase. And the street noise outside.
Cold. Room heaters help but they aren't left on all the time so it gets chilly if you're up early or go to the bathroom in the night.
Small. Private room with 2 people was difficult. Very narrow space between bed and wall. Made the morning difficult trying to get ready to go.
Extremely rustic. Boards screwed together form bathroom walls for example. That wouldn't have deterred me, but everything else did.
Overall, I'd use caution. I liked the people there but not the location or the private room.
