Kahal Shalom synagogue is traditional Sephardic style of having the "tevah" (the prayer reading table) in the center. The floor is decorated with graceful black and white mosaic stone patterns.

I was on Rhodes for Yom Kippur. I had decided I was not going to observe this most important of the Jewish holidays. But I was not entirely comfortable with this decision, so I went to this synagogue. Women had to sit upstairs. It was very powerful and I ended up spending the entire day there.
Jews from the cruise ships would step in for a short nod to this holy day. But when they then wanted to leave to see the rest of the island, the congregation wouldn't let them leave if it meant losing the minyan. These tourists played a very important role for the small congregation that was worshipping.

La piu antica sinagoga di Rodi, quello che resta, rivisitato e restaurato, dei fasti di un passato dell antica comunita sefardita (che a Rodi arrivò a contare fino a 6000 persone e che arrivò ad avere una scuola rabbinica talmente importante da far meritare alla stessa Rodi il nome di Piccola Gerusalemme). La nostra fortuna, esperienza di cui andiamo gelosamente fieri, è stata fare la conoscenza di Sami Modiano, una di quelle persone che l esperienza nella vita ha reso forti come le querce, splendide come i diamanti. 96 anni all anagrafe certo, ma chi parlava con noi era quel ragazzino di 13 anni strappato alla sua infanzia e gettato nell orrore dei lager: col suo racconto della comunità ebraica, della deportazione nei campi di concentramento, con le sue spiegazioni della sinagoga stessa e dei riti e della cultura ebraica, ci ha regalato uno dei momenti più belli e indimenticabili di questo viaggio.
