Nice old styled place. Very kind staff. Quite surrounding near center.

We stayed 2 nights (double room) from 28 March to 29 March 2017.

Overall: 1.5/5 – Caveat Emptor! Non German-speaking tourists beware! The ONLY hotel during our 3 week Germany tour that charged us additional fees (EUR48) from our booking confirmation, for reasons unknown to us. We suspect it’s the sofa bed, though this hotel informed us in advance that sofa bed for our 5yo boy is complimentary. Rushing to catch train to Lindau so we didn’t bother to argue. When we cross-checked this at subsequent hotels, their feedback was Hotel am Rathau’s action are unacceptable. BTW, this hotel was undergoing renovation but we were not informed in advance (unlike Hotel Victoria in Nuremberg, which politely declined our booking)! Knocking woke us around 8am! Our only major hotel disappointment...

Cleanliness: 1/5 – Looks clean at first glance but chambermaid actually swept everything under the bed frame (we saw candy wrappers, cotton buds and balls of dust/hair when we checked-in)!

Accessibility: 2.5/5 - 15 minute walk from Ulm Hbf or a short taxi ride. Very near Ulmer Rathaus and near Danube river and Fischerviertel for nice morning/evening walks.

Comfort: 1/5 – Double room is quite small, view was blocked by scaffolding; double bed/sofa bed was ok, neither hard nor soft; WC/bath area was small; good Wifi but you need to constantly login when you leave/re-enter the room; no elevators for this 4 storey hotel – gd luck if you have bulky luggage!

Food: 1/5 – Breakfast buffet included; good variety and quality but not promptly refilled. Breakfast area is small and you may have to share table when it is crowded. Observation: owner/staff seems unhappy if you eat more than what they think are your fair-share; collected my half-finished breakfast and cutleries right in my face…wow…hmm…it was my 1st serving, so I guessed they ran out of plates?

Hospitality: 1/5 – Lady in her 60s manning reception is cold and somewhat unfriendly; other staff are ok; most do not speak good English; felt like I’m in boarding school…

Ambience: 2.5/5 – Do note that reception area (check-in) is on ground floor, check-out on 1st floor (just outside breakfast area) to avoid needless stairs climbing; you either love or hate the ambience of this hotel, set in a converted old house with 19th C décor (some with creepy portraits of previous inhabitants?). Nearby Hotel Reblaus, under same ownership is much older and appeals to those who like living in old houses (note: guests of Hotel Reblaus has to walk to Hotel am Rathaus to have breakfast). We enjoyed living in old-style décor/houses like Eurostars Park Hotel Maximilian in Regensburg but Hotel am Rathaus’s ambience is really not our cup of tea.

Gotta say when the fourth hotel you've tried to get a room at doesn't turn you away, it's good. It's an old hotel, a classic, small rooms. It does have the wifi which is good, though they offered me in a room in the "old building" which evidently has worse WiFi so I didn't go there. It seems clean and well loved and nicely restored... Hopefully I don't freeze tonight; I'll let you know...the breakfast is nice. I didn't freeze last night which is always good. But I realized in the daylight that the interior looks like a nursing home Lady's lounge. Suffice it to say, everything, is pink and flowery. Not exactly my style but it was nice.

This is a great hotel if you don't speak German. The staff was very welcoming and the rooms are gorgeous.
