We recently had to put our two cats down at this location. (They were sisters, both very old and sick.) We brought them in to have them examined & the vet confirmed they were in pain and there wasn’t much worth doing at this stage in their lives to remedy it. The following day, we brought them in to be euthanized. We were both visibly shaken and upset, as anyone would be. The vet entered and saw that we had two cats and said ‘you’re putting them both down today? That’s sick! You must be so upset.’ I’m not sure if it’s a regional thing, as the vet did not sound like he was from around here, but I’d suggest avoiding using the terms ‘that’s sick’ when talking to clients who are in a very delicate situation emotionally. I don’t think he was being malicious or judgmental but in that moment, I questioned our decision to be there, I felt guilty, and it upset me even more than I already was. Please choose your words more wisely in the future - losing my two babies after 18 years was the most difficult thing I’ve had to do. I didn’t need to have fuel added to that fire.

Other than that, the staff were kind and helpful and we received a thoughtful sympathy card in the mail not long after.

We had to take my dog there to be euthanized and they were so compassionate. Dr Hurd was so kind explaining everything and giving us time to grieve our beloved girl. The girl at the counter was so kind after I called twice for information and then finally to book the appointment. Thank you so much for all your kindness and compassion. It was greatly appreciated.

Always see Dr Ogilvi, he's friendly and great with my cat. Was understanding regarding the cost of additional treatments and always makes recommendations or offers alternatives. Never pushy about getting additional services or treatments as some of my past vets have been. Even explained the contradiction in my cat's previous diagnosis. Reception is also friendly. Don't know anything about the other vets at the office though.

Thursday evening: Our very healthy 2-year old cat's third eyelid is sticking out and he seems a bit lethargic.

Friday morning: We take our cat to Whitby Animal Hospital and they do some bloodwork and tell us they will call us with the results on Saturday. No treatment is given.

Monday morning: Our cat is now vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. We have still not heard back from the vet, so we call them. My husband speaks to a different doctor who tells us his white blood cell count is low, but otherwise everything is normal. He says he will have the other vet call us back and will probably want to do more tests.

Tuesday at noon: My cat is now very sick, still vomiting with diarrhea, dehydrated. I call to find out what is going on. The receptionist tells me that the vet is very busy and will call when he can, but he's waiting to hear from a specialist because of an unusual result on the blood test. I ask her why this is the first time I'm hearing about it, and when I can expect to hear from the vet. She says she's not sure, and maybe today, or maybe tomorrow.

Tuesday at 3pm: I call again and reiterate that my cat is very sick and I would like to speak to the vet. She says he is still busy and she will pass on the message. I ask her to fax me the blood results.

Tuesday at 4pm: The vet finally calls. He apologizes for not calling sooner, says it was a misunderstanding. There is no mention of the specialist. He says we can bring the cat in if we want to, and tells us the number of the emergency vet, and says we can call them if we need to.

Tuesday at 9pm: The cat is very lethargic and dehydrated, so we take him to Cavan Hills veterinary clinic, where he stays overnight on an IV, with antibiotics, and they do some viral tests.

Wednesday morning: The cat's eyes have gone back to normal, and he's perked up. I call Whitby Animal Hospital to have them send all records to Cavan Hills.

Whitby Animal Hospital has been an adequate vet while our cat is healthy, but the lack of follow-up or treatment when our cat was sick, as far as I'm concerned, borders on incompetent. I won't be doing business with them again.

I am impressed by the always courteous, friendly and knowledgeable staff! They take great care in providing time for me to ask all my questions and they always have an acceptable answer for me.

Dr. McCleary is our vet and he is top notch. He has been looking after our pets for over ten years and is very passionate about what he does. His caring and compassion are outstanding! He obviously knows his stuff and knows it well.

I have no qualms in recommending the Whitby Animal Hospital to anyone looking for sound advice, caring and compassion, as well as top notch health care for your beloved pets!
