Recommended cultural visit. A large collection of art pieces which depict Bulgaria throughout the years.

Oh what a shame. What an utter shame. The curators of this gallery seem to have utter contempt for the splendid pieces of art inside. Lighting is not used to enhance the pieces - each room has spotlights, but they don't turn them on! Unbelievable! The main centre point of each room is not used to draw you in either. There are some lovely paintings here. However the place does not feel welcoming as the guards follow you around at each step. There are no seats to sit on to admire the magnificent but poorly lit and uncleaned / unrestored paintings. It was on a par with the national art gallery in Bucharest, but with far superior artwork. If only they knew how to run a proper 21st century art gallery. Go on Thursdays as it's only 2 lev for entrance (they keep this quiet). I frankly don't think they want people to know of the gallery's existence. It seems very much stuck in Communist times. The guards seem helpful (but as I don't speak Bulgarian, could not understand them). But quality art inside. The artwork is 5 stars whereas the way it is displayed is just two stars. Hence not 5 stars. Maybe they've no money to switch on the lights as they pay for too many security personnel?

It is the best art museum in Sofia. There are in good size and much better quality of buildings. The collection are wide. Need at least two hours to explore it.

Very nice art gallery with an amazing selection of Bulgarian art. Definitely worth a visit, just wish they had the painting materials and techniques on the painting information card

One of the concentration spots for art and culture in Sofia. Rich exhibition of Bulgarian as well as foreign collections, both contemporary and classical.
The museum is quite big and it's easy to get lost. It comprises of four buildings, interconnected with glass-covered warm paths. The square between the buildings is an open space yard, where you might find works of Rodin and others. Vast collection of paintings and sculptures inside as well, with a designated section for art from the ancient civilizations.
There is a lot to be desired as far as maintenance and taking good care of the valuable expositions is concerned. That's why I withhold one star in my review.
