This square is quite the special one, as it will sometimes be almost magical, and sometimes you will wonder what happened with it.
During summer the fountain is pretty and gives a much needed cold breeze where people can go sit down and eat a picnic. You can also go and enjoy one of the restaurants around it, which offer mainly sea menus. The square is still home to some of Brussels' fish merchants.
During December, the christmas market will be in there, with its joyful atmosphere that will make you forget of the cold weather. Added to the BEST Brussels waffles you can ever taste, the square is a must see when the market is in town.
But, in many other moments, the fountain will be off and sometimes even covered by algae, giving off a "dead fish" smell. The tourists and locals won't be sitting around, and the square will look empty and sad. The restaurants will still be around, so don't worry about that.
All in all, beautiful place, with good timing.

Like pretty much every other capital city in the world Brussels has had most of its true personality destroyed by immigrants and multinational corporations. Arrive at the station at night and you could be in London, Paris, New York or anywhere. It is also home to the temples to bland conformity that are the EU buildings. Brussels has never been as pretty as Bruges or Ghent, nor even as interestingly sleazy as Antwerp. It is nonetheless worth a visit or two. The Sint-Katelijneplein is as good a place as any to start. Easy to find. Plenty of food and beer. Actually I feel a bit guilty about being a bit hard on it to start with .......

Beautiful during summer because of the fountain which attracts tourists and locals. During winter they transform the place to a Christmas market, a must see.

Really nice square with really nice atmosphere. Worthy to pass by and check the church. Full of bars to enjoy good beers

Over of my favourite places in Brussels, mainly because of the great eating places in the area. Very lively in the weekends. Make sure to visit the church while you're there.
