Was admitted to Turon House, Bloomfield hospital, with the idea that I would stay approx 3 months. I lasted 2 weeks before escaping and making my way back to Sydney. Turon House is an oppressive, boot camp style unit with the majority of nurses being patronising and at worst down-right rude. I have never been to a mental health unit with so many rules. No mobile use at all, can use the ward phone only after 4.30 pm (then there is a queue to use the phone and the nurses get cranky because they have to dial the number), rooms locked after breakfast and not opened again until 4.30pm, wanted a lolly out of my locker but informed no lollies until Sunday, on Mondays only patients can have $6 for the vending machine, at breakfast you can have toast and cereal but only 1 piece of toast if you have cereal and only allowed 1 piece of fruit, you must go on the group walk even if you're not feeling well.....the list goes on! While I was there I witnessed girls crying time and time again out of frustration and desperation. Staff enforcing the rules talked to patients like we were little kids. Shame on you Turon House - you deserve to be shut down or else if you really want to treat patients like criminals make the ward a forensic unit.

It was a well equipped hospital when I went there in 2010. I felt the people there were good at their jobs. However they were not able to give me what I needed at the time, probably because I didn't feel able to speak with anyone.
